I've heard that the reason why Hell is eternal is because any crime (sin) against an infinitely good God requires an infinite punishment, yet if that's the case then justice could never be achieved since infinity can never be reached. Spending one more minute in Hell is more of a punishment than not doing so, therefore infinite punishment can never be reached since time will go on forever.

So what's the actual reason why Hell is eternal?

Hell is on earth and it is everywhere that is not in the heavenly kingdom. It is eternal because its denizens are a part of nature which ever seeks to destroy everyone that is of God.

2 - the catholic version of hell also includes purgatory which is the punishment section before hell
3 - something like almost all sins can be forgiven if the sinner repents yes a few millenia in purgatory to cleanse your soul and then heaven

The "punishment" language seems to mislead the modern viewer more than anything. It's like "fear of God", where fear doesn't actually mean the negative emotion, but respecting the immense power that God has.

Says who? If you're limited to a linear temporal POV, this would likely be your default position, but there is nothing to say that afterlife works this way.

From my understanding, because you cannot repent. You are dead. You are completely passive but still misaligned with the ultimate Good.

God wanted it to be so.

Amazing how liars are ever unaware even as they suffocate in their own lies perpetually. They blaspheme good and realize no ironies of their summary from one portion of a dialogue or arguement to another. They commit all hypocrisy and bully and browbeat with all determination that they will saved for "not knowing any better". They claim meekness but act as jackals. Truth is truth. Perfection is perfection. Justice is justice. What are the totalities of their absolutes? If you try to chip away at all of it, what manner of puppet to darkness are you? The best kind of course. All measure of law of man be spread throughout the Bible hence the reason they, given reason and wisdom and righteousness, question its validity. Because the Bible is not the Word at all. It is a book. It shows you the truth while being a lie. Such is the same with all the official doctrines if you simply look with your eyes. Same with all the other faiths in what they decree and decry given convenience of their momentary sentiments as they were drafted and the vile kings and rulers all agreed to their contents and how they be delegated and distributed as poison for your consumption. If you believe truth is evident in all here, start looking for it in totality and not stop when you tire. Keep looking through the discomfort. The truth does not coddle you indeed. And all your political views are in summary equally as flawed, and all solutions in the secular or spiritual are oppressed deliberately. Funny even satanists are permitted purchase through all this, wouldnt you say? Strange how comfortable everyone is with rulers committing all atrocity while selling and scamming along eternally. It is all one big miserable racket. And they have systems and networks of people to silence any and all acknowledgement of the facts of the situation once thoroughly reviewed. The "infinite punishment" thing is just theological cope to justify a cruel system. Hell is eternal because religions need a scary forever-threat to control you. Logic be damned. If God were truly just, finite sins wouldn't demand infinite torture.
