Slavs were largely late Scytho-Sarmatians who got pished off the steppe by their own turkic rapespawn and recovered in the forests between the Dnieper and Neva. They ended up inheriting everything in Eastern Europe in the centuries between massive steppemutt blobs rolling west.

They picked up the pieces of the Hunnic empire, had a massive population boom/cultural genesis and rapidly expanded and overran the frontiers of the Med and germanics before being stopped by the Franks and Eastern Romans, all tje while taking down smaller steppe waves lile Bolghars and Khazars in the east until getting flattened for a few centuries by the Mongols and Tatars, then later the Seljuk Turks.

Slavs don't make an ethnicity (stick your "15% Slavic DNA" into your ass), they started as a robust, decentralised civilisation with common language and customs which was particularly well suited to the conditions of chaos and collapse of large-distance trade and strong power structures. The language and culture was spreading - because it worked - not the genes.
