were they just obsidian tools? for some reason i thought they had copper/bronze tooling

all I remember from my ancient history course was that my professor seemed to think Africans and olmecs would trade and communicate with each other and used the giant olmec heads as an example of this, because he kinda looks like a black guy

Metallurgy got to prehispanic Mexico during the late 13th c., when Toltecs were around and still, it was only gold and silver to some extent; and for jewels.
Most common interpretations of Olmec giant heads is that it represented monarchs/chieftains (according to Ann Cyphers and Michael Coe, they even claim there were indications of lineages) ; and/or sacrificial heads related to fertility rituals (Caterina Magni and Christian Duverger).
The idea of Olmec being of Phoenico-African descent or trading with Africans isn't viewed nor accepted as a credible theory. It's mostly based on the assumption that native American peoples weren't capable of creating anything original which fueled white supremacists claims to dominating Mexico politically (to some critics that is)

Metallurgy only got to Mesoamerica around the same time the Middle Ages were going on in the Old World. Before that, they really were building big pyramids and cities with nothing but flint and obsidian (and still mostly were afterwards since they usually used metallurgy for ornamentation)

They had bronze.
There has been found bronze in the west of prehispanic mesoamerica, in the huaxtec region owned by the aztecs, in toluca, hidalgo and also Tenochtitlan, since Bernal Diaz del Castillo seems to describe a bronze axe in the tlatelolco market.

Bernal is a 16th c. source from the Spanish conquest anyway. It isn't sufficient proof to say Olmecs (~1250 - 300 BC) mastered bronze technology and made tools of it. Plus, there isn't any archaeological find to prop your point up

I never say olmecs knew metalurgy, metalurgy appeared till the the end of the classic and beginning of the posclassic in mesoamerica.
What im saying is that despiste the popular thought there was knowledge of bronze in mesoamerica.

I mean sort of, thats kinda just how they look naturally, but its a result of years of evolution from their diet. They had corn based diets and corn breaks down into sugar when digested, plus they also had chocolate and sugar and shit. They've evolved to process sugar differently and get fatty in various places, that's why latinas are thick as hell(but also prone to obesity)

My high school teacher for African American studies also said this. That and that Napoleon broke the nose off of the Great Sphinx of Giza because "white people didn't want black noses on statues so that they can pretend they weren't black." The class itself wasn't all that bad, but instances like that made me feel quite disappointed in people. People in burgerland are just easily misled I would say.

this ridiculous ass theory goes all the way back to the first finding of the olmec heads and its insane that level of ignorance is able to exist when you can literally just speak to any of the locals and they all look like that(well less so now that the oil industry has brought new people in but still, for a while they all did) and this is thousands of years later after lots of interbreeding, with spaniards of course and particularly with aztecs(both of these groups had thinner noses and less round faces than the locals), some evidence would suggest they were some of the few people that actually enjoyed aztec control, and they're quite proud of it, they even named a local village tenochtitlan to honor them.

shorter distance, more advanced ships, details lost amongst the billion other poorly documented colonization efforts? Do you seriously think vikings in longships sailing along mostly coastline is the same as primitive africans crossing 5000 miles of open tropical ocean in the most dangerous and storm prone part in big canoes? ONE successful voyage like that would be a virtually impossible miracle, but enough to bring enough africans over to significantly influence Olmec culture or even genetics? Absolutely not, not in a million years.

SPANISH sailors had major issues with ships constantly getting obliterated by rough seas at that latitude in the 15 and 1600s.

Or are you just being intentionally dense?

At least the Olmec wewuzzing is somewhat understandable compared to the tyrones who claim that latter Mesoamerican civilizations must also have been black based on depictions of "black-skinned" people in murals and codices and such. It's like, if you bothered reading anything at all about the subject you'd know that the Spaniards recorded quite extensively that wearing black paint all over their bodies in battle, rituals and a few other contexts was a nearly universal practice among Mesoamerican civilizations

And also, those same Spaniards already had very regular contact with black africans by the time they conquered the new world and even brought quite a lot of them with them during the conquests of Mexico and Peru, if there were black people in medieval Mexico they would have surely mentioned them
