The northern propagandists were forced to pick between being anti mass illegal immigration or anti south. They chose anti south. This is why the establishment in the US still supports illegal immigration

Anti-immigrant Northeners were also anti-slavery, so they preferred the republicans. Southern Fillmore voters were mostly against secession.
And apparently Fillmore wasn't even that musch of a nativist, even though he took over the know nothings.
