I often hear that the Japanese would have surrendered unconditionally anyway because of the Soviet invasion, and that the atomic bombings were unnecessary. How true is this? Is there any proof?

Considering that 2/3 of japans war council wanted to continue the war AFTER the second bomb and there was a fucking coup to kidnap the emperor because he wanted tonsurrender. I would say if hirohito had a heart attack or something the japs would have kept fighting after 10 atom bombs

There is no certain proof, but at this point they were exhausted, the only logical move to make would be to give up.

the vast majority of the japanese army was busy in china so the red army sweeping across china meant japan would've been well and truly fucked, with nothing but militias left to defend the home islands.
the atomic bombings were horrifying but overall not much different from the firebombings the us had been carrying out for months at that point.
