Darrell Rich, the Hilltop Rapist, murdered four young women and girls in a summer 1978 killing spree in Shasta County, California, and became one of a handful of people the Golden State has executed in the modern era of capital punishment. One fourth Cherokee Indian, he was born in California on February 14, 1955 but exactly where is not known. He was given up for adoption to a foster family shortly after his birth. His foster mother was something of an imperious, dominating woman and Darrell resented her as she cared for other people's children professionally, although Darrell was at times helpful with the other children and rescued one of them from drowning once. A poor student in school, he was held back a grade and the school psychologist worried that he had possible sociopathic tendencies. When Darrell was 15, his parents got divorced and he considered suicide. He lived in SoCal with his mother for a time and then in NorCal with his father.

After getting in an argument with his girlfriend when he was 17, he attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. Rich also shot a gun at a police car in the hope that the officer would fire back and kill him. A psychiatrist ruled that he was a suicide risk and needed treatment ASAP but he didn't want any help. When Rich was 18, he got drunk and rammed his mother's car into another vehicle. He was sentenced to a county jail camp and his probation officer found him comparatively normal and level-headed when sober but drinking brought out the worst in him.

About a year later, Rich went on a drinking binge and attacked another person with a tire iron. When he heard police coming he punched out the victim's car window and drove off. He was arrested and went berserk while being treated for his injury. He was sentenced to the California Youth Authority where he was diagnosed as not having mental issues but that he did show bizarre behavior. He got married around this time, had a child, and worked at a lumber mill. Rich beat his wife at least twice and for a while was then able to control himself but in April 1976 he was smashed up in a car wreck and required multiple stitches, leaving a permanent scar on his nose. He beat his wife a few months later and they split by mutual agreement in the summer of 1977.

Rich's work performance deteriorated during this time. He began living with a woman named Darlene Munsinger but they ended up arguing and splitting up several times. Both Rich's first wife and Munsinger claimed they'd had a normal sex life with him and that he never displayed any sociopathic tendencies or interest in extreme forms of sex.

On June 13, 1978, Rich attacked a 25 year old woman as she walked over a bridge in Redding. He demanded the woman perform oral sex on him, but when she refused his demands he beat her over the head, fracturing her skull, and left her for dead but she was eventually found and rescued; due to her injuries, she was unable to get up and try to get help and was only found when a passerby noticed her there. Five days later he kidnapped a 21 year old woman. Rich was sitting in his car by the side of the road and called to her as she passed by. She refused to come. A little later when she was waiting for a bus, Rich approached from behind, grabbed her, and dragged her into his car. He ordered her to undress and then covered her face with his shirt so she couldn't see him. Rich raped and performed cunnilingis on her, then ordered her to perform oral sex on him. The woman was finally released after Rich told her he knew where she lived and he would kill her if she told on him. Rich later bragged to friends how easy it was to abduct women.

Rich then raped a 14 year old on June 25. The girl and her boyfriend were walking in Redding when Rich pulled up to them and offered them a ride. They accepted and the girl began to get in the car, after which Rich pulled her in, slammed the door, and drove off. He ordered her to undress. Rich pulled over and attempted to rape her but could not achieve an erection. Finally he forced the girl to give him oral sex before letting her go.

On July 4, he grabbed a 19 year old woman as she was walking in Reddit. The two struggled until Rich knocked her unconscious. The woman came to and realized she was being rolled towards a body of water and resumed struggling. Rich ripped off her shirt and ordered her to take off her pants. He covered her face with the pants so she couldn't see what he looked like, raped her, and left. A few hours later he attacked Anette Edwards, also 19, as she was walking home from a 4th of July fireworks display. Rich kidnapped Edwards, raped her, and killed her with several blows to the head. Her body was found in an embankment three days later partially undressed; the cause of death was ruled as blunt force head trauma.

On July 18, he abducted a 15 year old off her bicycle in Redding. Rich asked her what time it was, then grabbed her by the hair. He punched her in the face, forced her into his car, and drove off. Rich ordered the girl to undress. He stopped the car and demanded she perform oral sex on him. Rich then drove off to another location, threatening to beat the girl with a flashlight if she didn't obey his demands. He also told her he had a gun in the car and that there was a dead body in the trunk. Rich pulled over, raped her, and performed cunnilingis on her before letting her go.

On August 2, Rich abducted 17 year old Patricia Moore, who was raped, strangled, and killed with several blows to the head. Her nude body was found in a dump two weeks later, dead of major head trauma and some of her teeth were missing; it appeared that she was killd with a large rock. On August 6, Rich picked up 27 year old Linda Slavik in a bar, took her to the dump where Moore was left, and showed her the body. He raped Slavik and shot her with a .22 pistol as she begged for mercy. Rich told his friends how Slavik pleaded for her life. Her nude body was found 20 feet from Moore's, shot in the neck and mouth; the second shot went through the back of her throat and cut through her neck vertebrae and spinal cord, resulting in death from cardiopulmonary arrest due to severing the connection between the brain stem and heart and lungs.

On August 13, Rich abducted 11 year old Annette Selix, whose family he happened to know, as she was walking to the store on an errand. Selix was raped, forced to perform oral sex on him, and thrown off a bridge in Shasta County. She was still alive at that point and had died of internal bleeding; her thigh also had bite marks on it that would later be found to match Rich's teeth.

Selix was his final victim. Due to her young age, her murder was considered a high priority case by Shasta County police. Rich was interviewed because he'd worked for Selix's mother although he was not then considered a suspect. He agreed to a polygraph exam and it was discovered that Rich showed a friend a body at the dump where Moore and Slavik were found. Detectives increasingly believed Rich was lying and he also failed the polygram test. He told his friends about the murders and they revealed this confession to police. The .22 pistol was found at his mother's house and he finally confessed to murdering Selix and eventually all of his crimes.

Rich was found guilty of two counts of first degree murder and sentenced to death on January 23, 1981. He appealed his conviction and in his appeal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Michael Hawkins wrote "The investigation of the crimes leading to Rich's arrest and trial produced substantial public notice in the community where those crimes occurred and understandably so. To even the most hardened eye, the crimes were almost unimaginably brutal -- savage attacks on defenseless young women, all sexually ravaged. Five [sic] were also murdered: two bludgeoned to death, a third shot in the face and a fourth -- an 11-year-old girl -- thrown off a 100-foot bridge to her death. Five other women, ranging in age from 14 to 25, managed to survive; four unhesitatingly identified Rich as their attacker."

Rich was executed by lethal injection at San Quentin on March 15, 2000, one of three persons executed in the United States that day, the others being Timothy Gribble in Texas and Patrick Poland in Arizona. He did not request a last meal and consumed only tea, broth, and Gatorade. The prison declined his last request to perform a Native American sweat lodge ceremony to "purify" his spirit which they said was too much of a security risk.

Darrell Rich is oddly not very well remembered possibly because there were many other serial killers active in CA at the time and he just kind of got buried by more high profile guys like the Toolbox Killers.
