They're not any more dysfunctional than the surrounding states (minus jewtopia of course). Apart from the obvious however, Lebanon is uniqiely fucked due to its demographics and style of governance. See, back when the Ottomans were collapsing, the French had a hard-on for the Maronites and vice versa due to their extensive history together and how they had recently helped them against Ottoman famine. So, the French decided to give the Maronites their own state carved out of the Mt. Lebanon region, which is the historic homeland of the Maronites and where they constitute a majority alongside the slight presence of Druze. However, the Maronite patriarch believed that a state solely in the mountains wouldn't be self sufficient and that they needed farmland, so he decided to ask for a sort of "greater Lebanon" instead which comprised a country from Tripoli to Tyre and contained a great amount of shias and some sunnis as well. This combined with the higher emigration rates of Christians, the fact that Muslims pop out kids like a fax machine does paper, and the highest amount of refugees per capita in the world (mostly sunnis from Syria and Palestine), the Christians no longer made up an absolute majority of the population pretty early on. This is why the country won't do an official census and hasn't done one since 1932. (1/2)

While being that diverse is obviously going to make a country worse, the thing that compounds with this is the retarded confessional system. In short, the confessional system allocates a certain number of seats in the Lebanese parliment to members of the major religions, and this is allegedy done with population in mind. Except of course for the fact that the president has to be a Maronite AND they get the most seats in the parliment despite the fact that they're clearly NOT the slight majority they were initially. This obviously bred resentment among the other religions (particularly muslims) which led to people hating the central government and only identifying with their religious sect or foreign nationality and the corresponding militia that represented for them (Hezbollah, Ouwet, PLO, etcetera). Obviously some groups like the SSNP desired to shed this blatantly ridiculous system, but they were unfortunately brought into the sectarian shit as well by default since every other group mostly only associated with their militias which is why a majority of their supporters are non-maronite christians like the greek catholics or orthodox. You can look up shit about the Lebanese civil war and Israeli expulsion from the south to see why half of Lebanon isn't a part of Syria anymore or why Hezbollah is the only militia with weapons, but this is the general gist of why shit is so fucked up here. Lebanon was never really meant to be a real country. The region has always been part of the broader Levant: Syria, Jordan, Palestine. When the French arrived they created a diversity brigade that included anyone who wasn’t Sunni Arab, mainly to weaken their influence.

These people lived alongside each other for a thousand years, and up until the late 19th century it was relatively peaceful. Outside observers who claim Arabs are the only ones causing trouble, or that Lebanon was supposed to be exclusively Maronite, usually say so because they hate Muslims.

During the civil war all sides committed horrific crimes: abductions, mass killings, rape, forced displacement, often under the pretext of protecting their own communities. Even smaller minorities like the Armenians were involved.

Some right-wing Christian factions and Druze militias even received support from Israel, despite most people from both sects hating Israel and sympathizing with Palestinians. They claim it was mainly about opposing the PLO, but in reality it served Israeli influence. They caused as much trouble as Hezbollah, Saudi-backed factions, and secular pan-Arab leftist groups.

I’m honestly surprised Hezbollah and those right-wing militias aren’t out in arms storming the capital, taking out the corrupt sectarian, Westernized elite and the cosmopolitan population.

Looking at how things are going, more Lebanese will probably end up in Latin America or West Africa because of emigration, Israeli and Iranian meddling, and the country being a complete shithole.

A Lebanese friend once told me they’re sick of foreign tourists hitting on their women. They’ve been involved in brawls that sometimes turn lethal. Nobody really cares about this dirty hellhole or its future, except for superficial stuff like geopolitics, food, their crappy Las Vegas, or women.

The SSNP are Greater Syria types and were allied with Syria as well which intervened in the war and had their own agenda. Although that starts to get murky to me. But it makes sense why Greek Catholics or Orthodox would be interested in that because they see themselves having a place in it. But as you also point out, the conflict sectarianized so even groups with theoretically non-sectarian ambitions ended up essentially fighting as sectarian militias.

I'm wondering, is that strictly true? Like do the Druze in around Jumblatt's palace have AK-47s stashed in case they need them? I've seen some videos from them where they're doing squad maneuvers inna hills. Nothing like Hezbollah but it's not, like, no weapons at all. Or is it just generally the case that the other groups don't have militias but a lot of people with confessional identites have a rifle stashed under a bed or hidden in a clost.

NTA but it's political and "makes sense" in that context. This stuff usually is political. Nationalism around the world that seems natural at one point involved borrowing myths off the shelf, or inventing myths and trying to popularize them with people to get to think of themselves as members of that particular nation. Of course, people come to believe in it and it becomes a force, and that does make it "real" in a sense too.

I was reading about this recently -- in Israel there's an attempt to fashion an Aramean identity out of Arab Christians and they even found a Greek Orthodox priest to help them. I don't know to what extent Arab Christians there buy into this, or what it really means or the historical/cultural background and whether it's real or invented, although it appears some do share it. But it's very obvious why Israel wants to encourage this.

You're right, I shoulda clarified. Most men in Lebanon have rifles and handguns stached around the place, the country is very armed and most villages follow a specific religion and have a minutemen-esque militia strategy. However, Hezbollah is by far the most powerful, like they're more powerful than the actual Lebanese and Syrian armies, and they're commonly said to be the most powerful "militia" on earth. They have their own engineering wings, missiles, heavy weapons, armored vehicles, extensive foreign connections (including outside of Iran), and near complete political impunity within the country itself. It's to the point that comparing the others to Hezbollah feels disingenuous, and depending on which Lebanese you ask, they act more as our army than the actual army.

Circa 1950 Lebanon generously took in Palestinian refugees from Syria and other war-torn areas. With the defeat of the PLO in Jordan (September 1970), many Palestinian militants relocated to Lebanon. This led to increasing sectarian tensions between Palestinians versus the Maronites (Lebanese Christians) and other Lebanese factions.

Now Lebanon is hell on earth. A multifaceted civil war among Christians, Sunnis and Shiites from 1975 to 1990 simmers to this day.

Why is this solely our responsibility? Lebanon is a tiny country yet we're expected to destroy Israel alone. Why not ask Jordanians or Egyptians to get off their asses for once? 100 percent. It's meant to be a minority ruled country by Christians. All set up by the French. But the other people and the big minority of sunni Muslims weren't happy with it. For obvious reasons. In my opinion, southern labenon should join Israel and take all the Christians and non Muslims with them. Northern Lebanon can join syria and take In all the palestineans. People would have to move around but it would put a giant bandaid on the area that might hold.

Hopefully Lebanon and the neighboring countries won’t exist once Greater Israel is established, maybe then the complacent goyim from the Maronite and Druze regions will finally realize they’re next on the chopping block.
