What is the origin of Gnostic beliefs? It's unclear to me where it actually came from. Is it some Mesopotamian cult? Or is it Hellenic?

Theres already a trend of world rejection and demiurgy. In John christ serves as the intermediary demiurge through which god makes the world. Matthew calls the world evil and implies its ran by Satan. The dualism is there already in the canonical, along with celibacy and the emphasis on jesus's secret teachings to his inner circle. After the jewish war in 70 it seems natural for an extreme world denying religion to arise, all the ingredients are there and the gnostics just took it further
