The incense, bells, and Latin chants all seem very mystic to someone who doesn't know the meaning behind them.

Unironic answer is this
1. Gothic Cathedrals focuses on "spiky" shapes, which is a universal image for danger and threats.
2. Extreme Megalophobia
3. The main theme is honoring the sacrifices of the Lord and his martyrs who died gruesome deaths

By design, Catholic Churches follow the exact motif that you would expect from a horror cult

But this was completely invested in the focus on Divine Love and sacrifice.

Thus, the running theme in Catholic Churches is that you are loved by a divine being who would gladly undergo the most painful of sufferings to keep you safe

Looking at Churches is like looking at a father who's body was battered and broken but still carrying his child. Or a starving mother who gave her plate to her child.

It is horrifying, it is tragic, and it is the true form of love.

This is also why Orthodox and Islam don't have the same aura. The swirly Spyres denote playfulness and child-like wonder. Not a bad thing but it is clear why it doesn't resonate much with the message of sacrifices done in blood
