My local municipal water district even sends out annual water quality reports for reassurance and it's easy to take for granted that our water supply has always been safe to drink.

Not really but the non-Arab people who built and maintain their water system are.

I personal go every week to a spring in the hills and get my water from there. I exclusively drink spring water now, for more than a year already.

Where does this happen?
Unless you've got access to a well supplied by an aquifer or a spring in your backyard, your water is tainted in at least several different ways.
fluoride
PFAS
birth control
herbicides
random industrial pollutants
microplastics

I think I read a while back that even aquifers were getting some microplastics though.
For some reason you NEVER EVER hear about pollution anymore. It's all about global warming now. Pollution is politically inconvenient and puts the perpetrators to shame.
