Online LARPagans love to bitch and moan endlessly about muh pagan statues and temples being destroyed by Christians, as if this is somehow exceptional and noteworthy or some kind of special crime against humanity, as if pagans wouldn't do the same if the had the opportunity to do the same to Christians if they had the chance, if pagans were to take over Christian societies they'd destroy everything Christians have built.

Maybe they should just simply accept that destroying the material culture of your enemies is normal, standard behavior when it comes to civilizational clashes, Christians destroying pagan art is not exceptional or worthy of indignation, destroying your enemy's art is quite literally the norm, it's what everyone has done, pagans included.

It's what every civilization has done, retard. Julius Caesar genocided the Druids, Akhenaten destroyed the religious infraestructure of Egypt in order to make Aten the only god, Aztecs destroyed the history of their conquered enemies, which is why Spanish conquistadors had such an easy time destroying Mesoamerican history, because by the time they came the Aztecs had already done half the work for them.

Lmao, hardly. If pagans took over, Christian idols and whatnot would end up in private collections and museums. The Muslims use the Hagia Sophia as a mosque - no point in destroying fine art, unless you are a superstitious Christian and think it's demonic.

Ironically the crossroaches that defaced statues would have detested Christian idols too, they simply understood the Jewish second commandment the same way the Jews who chimped out at the Caesar statues did, the same way Muslims do now.

You mean like all of the idols and works of art that have been preserved by Christians throughout the ages and are in museums right now?
>The Muslims use the Hagia Sophia as a mosque - no point in destroying fine art
Muslims destroyed the majority of the art inside the Hagia Sophia because they consider it idolatrous. And ever since it became a mosque again all the art on the walls has been covered and you can't see it because it functions as a mosque now, not a museum, as it was a couple of years ago.
>Ironically the crossroaches that defaced statues would have detested Christian idols too
Christian iconography goes all the way back to when Christians were in catacombs. The iconoclast controversy didn't happen until much later in the Byzantine Empire, nothing to do with when Christianity was risign.

Except Hellenism is actually true while Christianity is a scam that produced nothing of value.

Christians do not even want to give an actual reason for why their beliefs are “true”, instead using statements such as “just believe” and “your faith will save you”. Any religion who explicitly requires its followers to have blind faith is by definition a cult. Due to their blind faith, any trickster among them can acquire mass wealth (eg. mega churches).

Christians cannot even come to any sort of agreement and often slander each other as “heretics”. Whether it be Protestants accusing Catholics of being “Satan-worshipping pagans” or the Catholic Church declaring a crusade against the Cathars for “heresy”, each sect has convinced itself that they are the one true church founded by Jesus Christ himself and that everyone else are “heretical splinter groups.”

Jesus himself was nothing more than a grifter. He was not the “son of God”, but rather was the child of a Roman soldier named Panthera whom Mary had committed adultery with. His “miracles” were nothing more than cheap magic tricks he learned during his childhood in Egypt (which was known for its magicians). Apollonius and Vespasian did similar things, are they too the “son of God”? Also, the resurrection was fake. His teachings are also absurd as he asks you to forgive your enemies even as they abuse you and to reject the material world.

Hail Zeus, Athena, Apollo, and all the other gods of Olympus

And to be clear when I say non-Jewish gospel I specifically mean that Matthew was speaking to Jews, and thus put emphasis on Jesus' relationship to the Old Testament, which you quoted earlier.

In other words, this obsession with idolatry is Jewish and not actually Christlike.

My source is the Bible and Jesus' teachings.

Jesus didn't make any explicit comments about icons or statues but he made it very clear in many passages that faith and worship comes from the heart, and that idolatry is committed at that level, not simply by depicting things and people. Keep in mind this is a mainstream belief, considering most churches accept icons and other works of art.

Just like he doesn't denounce Caesar's money outright he probably wouldn't denounce icons or statues outright. I think that passage is the closest thing you'll get to an actual statement on icons.

I'll add that understanding the distinction Jesus is making here is very crucial to the Christian faith. Legalistic, theological and material obsession is exactly what he professed against and what he attempted to hold the leaders of Israel accountable for.

>>17949083
There is nothing in Jesus' message that suggests chimping out against material depictions.

Not him but iconoclasm is a tendency among Muslims and was a controversy in ye olden days among Christians. That's why you see mosques decorated very simply, with patterns and writing maybe on the walls maybe but usually no depictions of humans or non-human animals. Definitely no depictions of Allah, or even their Prophet. Some Protestants share similar views, and their churches might only feature a cross (not crucifix).

>Not him but iconoclasm is a tendency among Muslims and was a controversy in ye olden days among Christians.
Depends on what you mean by in "ye olden days". Christians have been making images of Jesus all the way back since the catacombs in the 2nd and 3rd century. The iconoclast controversy only happened until the 700s, CENTURIES after. So iconoclasm happened quite late in the history of Christianity, and it was deemed a heresy by both Catholics and Orthodox.

Yeah but Catholics definitely and probably Orthodox engage in officially sanctioned idolatry, praying to dead humans and angels. Once the local Catholic church brought a golden idol purportedly containing Pope JPII's blood to the parish and everyone worshipped it. Looking back it was fucking weird.

most serious pagans are general european enthusiasts. I think Tom Rowsell got married in an anglican church despite not being christian. Pagans would preserve christian monuments and temples and just repurpose them to be pagan. Even medieval pagans would do this. Everyone is doing the sign of the cross now due to the advent of christianity? Fuck it, how about we just say it's the sign of the Hammer of Thor instead and call it a day. Everyone is wearing crucifixes now? Well shit, how about we just retcon Thor's Hammer into a cross shape so we can say that crucifixes are icons of Thor.

The main thing to consider is that among ancient peoples, there was typically the idea that foreign deities were just the same deities but with different cultural interpretations. To deface a foreign deity, under most circumstances, would be just as disrespectful to one's own version of that deity. Jews and Christians were the only ones that outright refused to accept this general worldview because their desert cults demanded exclusivity. The Romans and their treatment of Christians was quite tame, even when they didn't cooperate, and they punished them accordingly. It was only after Christians gained power that the rights of the traditionally religious were eroded until they were outright banned and forcefully converted, which led to the medieval eras, in which Christians would go around killing their fellow Europeans if they didn't convert to an offshoot cult of Judaism, and would constantly in-fight with the other Abrahamic religions. In comparison, the Romans only ever outright destroyed other peoples' religions and cultures when they were explicitly evil, like the Carthaginians' child sacrifice.
