Slavery was a well established, ancient, practice in Africa long before the first European moved further south than Africa's Mediterranean coastline. African societies would sell slave to the Arabs (still their best customer in this market), they'd buy and sell slaves to each other. The king of Ethiopia described his nations slave farms - where they literally bred their countrymen like livestock and raised them from birth to believe that slavery was good for them - as 'My families treasure chest'. Slavery was Africa's entire economy, and would still be today (rather than being a profitable little side hustle for them) if they hadn't realised they could make more money - for the ruling elite - by pimping out their nations metal/mineral reserves to foreign companies.

Also, for most European empires in Africa (except for freaks like the French and Belgians) they were a lot more interested in keeping their spending down than going around genocideraping everything they could see. For example the general policy in British colonies for most of their time in Africa was 'if you don't start shit we're happy to leave you alone'.
