Why are some of society’s elites so obsessed with population control? Obviously you shouldn’t just shit out a kid every time it’s physically possible, but this whole idea that ‘having children is evil’ is outright absurd.

Not just the elite are obsessed with Malthusian theory. Unchecked population growth would strain healthcare services, education, and infrastructure, and eventually it might strip the planet dry of resources.

Fertility rates are pretty low as is and expecting foreign markets to somehow "match" developed ones 1:1 makes no sense.

Not elites, futurists are concerned that technology isn't advancing fast enough. If we use up the good resources before developing decent technology, it could be failure to launch as a type I civilization.

The objective of population control would be to put Earth in a deep freeze, a new dark age, where the pleb doesn't have earth scorching technology but research continues deep in protected institutions.
