>Hypatia[a] (born c. 350–370; died 415 AD)[1][3] was a Hellenistic Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician, who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, then part of the Eastern Roman Empire.

>Although she herself was a pagan, she was tolerant towards Christians and taught many Christian students. Ancient sources record that Hypatia was widely beloved by pagans and Christians alike and that she established great influence with the political elite in Alexandria. Towards the end of her life, Hypatia advised Orestes, the Roman prefect of Alexandria, who was in the midst of a political feud with Cyril, the bishop of Alexandria.

>According to Socrates Scholasticus, during the Christian season of Lent in March 415, a mob of Christians under the leadership of a lector named Peter, raided Hypatia's carriage as she was travelling home.[96][97][98] They dragged her into a building known as the Kaisarion, a former pagan temple and center of the Roman imperial cult in Alexandria that had been converted into a Christian church.[88][96][98] There, the mob stripped Hypatia naked and murdered her using ostraka,[96][99][100][101] which can either be translated as "roof tiles" or "oyster shells".[96] Damascius adds that they also cut out her eyeballs.[102] They tore her body into pieces and dragged her limbs through the town to a place called Cinarion, where they set them on fire.

Bros wtf.....

The roman empire has a history of brutal political violence.

Mob violence like this was pretty normal in politics for most of history and the only reason anybody cares about it today is because she was a woman and was killed by Christians and can therefore be conveniently misconstrued by people with modern agendas. You'll find no movies about the deaths of Saturninus or the Gracchi brothers, even though they were the exact same sort of murders, because they don't serve any agenda.

Nah this shit was never normal, it's no coincidence that this happened in the 5th century, a time when Roman social decline had been profound and deep for centuries and had reduced the general population to a quasi-subhuman level of existence. This type of event is "normal" for 5th century Rome but it would have been seen as an utter abomination 4 centuries earlier for example.

>Marcus Antonius was elected without opposition; the other candidate, Gaius Memmius, who seemed to have the better chance of success, was beaten to death by the hired agents of Saturninus and Glaucia, while the voting was actually going on.
>This produced a complete revulsion of public feeling. The Senate met on the following day, declared Saturninus and Glaucia public enemies, and issued the so-called 'final decree' (senatus consultum ultimum) calling upon Marius to defend the State.[6] Marius had no alternative but to obey. Saturninus, defeated in a pitched battle in the Roman Forum, took refuge with his followers in the Capitol, where, the water supply having been cut off, they were forced to capitulate. Marius, having assured them that their lives would be spared, removed them to the Curia Hostilia, intending to proceed against them according to law. But the more impetuous members of the aristocratic party climbed onto the roof, stripped off the tiles, and stoned Saturninus and many others to death.
not comparable imo. hypatia was just some lady who knew math

Pogroms, especially during wartime, are a totally different thing from dragging a private citizen (moreover a highborn one) and brutally dismembering them in a place of worship.

The modern story of Hypatia is literally atheist propaganda that Carl Sagan pushed into relevance via his audience of photo-reddit midwits. We know for a fact that Hypatia murder was politically motivated not religious. Also, as someone else already said, these kinds of brutal public murders were common throughout Rome's existence.
