Even though large swaths of the US had been destroyed in 1865, the Union should’ve taken advantage of their massive, technologically advanced army and navy to conquer the entire Western Hemisphere immediately after the civil war ended.

That was more or less the end goal of the Monroe Doctrine and in many ways it was implemented in a big was, especially after the end of the Spanish-American War and Americas role in building the Panama Canal

BAKA, typical armchair historian forgets what history is really about, the masses of the people of THAT time and THAT place and what THEY were feeling.

You just had an almost 5 year war that ripped apart almost every family, single mothers, maimed and gimped men (and those were the lucky survivors). A whole half of the country that wouldn't recover economically for almost 100 years and all those mouths to feed in that region. And then your leaders head blown off as Congress was impeaching his Vice, the very first impeachment in our history (think Watergate or all the stuff with Trump in 2020).

To be fair, the West was always a rather violent place (read about California after the start of the Gold Rush for instance, everything from drunkards getting shot in saloons to Indians and settlers massacring each other), but the sudden influx of traumatized war vets and refugees certainly didn't help.
