18 is when the vast majority of the population graduates high school. The modern world is predicated on having at least graduated high school before finding work and living on your own.

The taboo is because people got used to the idea of the age of consent being 18 and because getting pregnant before getting out of high school can mess your life up. You're over-thinking it.

It came from the western European marriage pattern where girls were already marrying older and closer in age to their husband than women were in most other parts of the world. The western european marriage pattern developed as a fluke of Christianity having female clergy. Unwed girls were a major problem for families because they were not nearly as much of an economic/political asset as men, so if they're not producing children they're kind of useless. This meant generally families in most of the world would try to offload them in the first good marriage deal they could broker with another family soon after they could breed. Western Europeans had the backup plan of shipping them off to a convent if they never got married rather than being stuck with an old maid, so they could afford to be "pickier" with brokered marriages, meaning girls generally got married older. This had the knock-on effect of women in western european marriages having more equitable "power" in married relationships with more of a brother-sister like dynamic than a father-daughter one. This led to feminism developing over time and the idea that the power imbalance between young teenage girl and an older husband was bad enough to warrant adopting formal laws against it.

In the United States, feminist activists had the age of consent raised from a reasonable 10-12 to the absurdly high ages of 16 to 18. The consequences have been dire, as lowering the age of consent and marriageability have a direct causal relation with lowered fertility rates.
