What was life like for the average soldier in the Iran-Iraq War? Anyone have photos or first-hand stories? And did the Iran-Iraq War fundamentally shift the balance of power in the Middle East, or was it just a destructive stalemate that left both states weakened for decades?

It has very similar vibes to Ukraine-Russia war. Slow, grinding trench warfare that will probably last for many more years without any significant territorial gains until both sides are exhausted and give up

But are the political goals really that similar

The Iraqi soldiers were Shi’a conscripts, and were often hesitant to fight fellow Muslims. However, they were much more confident as they were better equipped than the Iranians, thanks to the French arms.

What fucked up Saddam was Kuwait and having Iraq's military decimated plus 13 years of sanctions.
Iraqs war with Iran put it in a lot debt but it had a quantitative advantage in tanks in and other major equipment by the wars end. So economically weakened but not in military power.

Not after Iran invaded, it's funny how both Saddam and Khomeini thought the populations of each would join them once they invaded, the Arabs in Khuzestan and Shias in Iraq respectively

True, the Shi’a conscripts had doubts but can better gear really offset fighting a war you don’t believe in?

True, superior tech isn't everything. The Vietnam War is probably the most famous example of this.
