Whether you revile Hitler as the evil incarnate or revere him as a savior sent to rescue a dying people, you cannot speak of Hitler without summoning a mythical aura. He is not treated as a mere man, but as a figure closer to a god β€” or a devil β€” than to any ordinary mortal…

Hitler was an ordinary mortal. The hysteria over him is an invention as much as his cult of personality.

It is a kind of survivor bias. We do not assume a lottery winner is exceptional, if anything they are likely low IQ for gambling, yet for some reason we assume everything about Hitler's life was his orchestration. There were many like Hitler who were excellent orators or had fresh original ideas, but whether these traits synch with the public is in large part due to change.

Hitler certainly changed himself to try to appeal to the public, but he was limited in his ability to understand and predict what would make him a success. Indeed if it weren't for the great depression, millions of PTSD veterans and Germany's Weimar Republic imposed on it after their defeat he would have no more success than Oswald Mosley.

It's fully possible to hold Hitler as just a man.
And Frankly, had he won WW2 he would be far less mythified. And EsoNazism would not even exist.
Hitler as something more than a man has it's origins in his death.
