The past 5-10 years, especially the post-COVID era, has seen a significant paradigm shift in public discourse, which, combined with the tendency of people nowadays to treat ideology/worldview as some kind of subscription to an already pre-built group with specific features and learning, rather than discovering or composing your own beliefs, has led to the mess that we see now. People convince themselves that they "have to believe" in certain specific things that are not really compatible with who they are; this includes cases like the one in the OP, as well as, for example, so-called "anti-capitalists" who are extremely faithful towards corporations and the lifestyle they push, "traditionalists" who know little of the traditions they are supposed to be following, "open-minded liberals" who hate anyone who doesn't have the "right" opinions, "environmentalists" who are more concerned about bottle caps and paper bags than industrial waste or air traffic, "progressives" who align with Islamic fundamentalists, and the lists goes on and on ad infinitum
