Because Soviet and Russian tradition values the endurance of suffering. Meanwhile, liberal imperialism was practiced by weak non-warrior nations like France, and Fascism was practiced by nations who valued the aesthetics of the military, but didn't actually want to fight.

this makes me quite sympathetic to Italians. they ended up in stupid wars abroad, commanders knew that, did their minimum just not to get court martial-ed, and got as much of their lads out as they could. not so with english and americans, wherever they went it was always about maximum damage and throwing boys into a meat grinder. if italians were such shitty soldiers italy would be torn up by its neighbours, but it obviously isn't
