When Theodosius I ordered the pagan temples shuttered, the native Egyptian religion was dead in 2 generations. Despite being possibly the oldest still practiced religion in the world at that time, and despite the temples being the only repository of how to read and write the hieroglyphic inscriptions ubiquitous around Egypt, nobody cared to save it. It collapsed the nanosecond it no longer had state funding, and everyone was just ok with that. To me that shows it must have been a religion very divorced from the lives of the average Egyptian and unappealing/irrelevant to them, just a religion for priests, and even they had no problem changing clothes to a Christian priest's as soon as it became advantageous to do so.

When Akhenaten forced Egyptians to abandon their old gods in favor of Ra, people abandoned their God of 1000 years and did it without any violence. And went back to their old gods once Akhenaten died.

To me it implies people will go along with anything as long as they have plenty of food and prosperity. They have no real beliefs or convictions.
