NTA, my personal take is what made America great was its rejection of Old World dogma and identity politics, this attitude enabled fierce reclamation of land and enabled an industrious population the likes of which had not been seen before in human history. America was always a (relatively) multi-ethnic country, but it was this ideal that everyone should have the right to self-determination, and not be burdened by having to live up to their peers, but could choose to live the way they see fit, that made this country great.

I think it would be very hard to prove a concept of "right to self-determination" had anything to do with this country's history prior to the late 19th century at the earliest. What the founding fathers talked about was life, liberty and property.

Why choose? The initial wave of colonists rapidly horded political and economic power in the colony and actively worked against the prosperity of later groups. The most prominent families had established themselves as above and separate by the second generation. They were just as rapacious and greedy as any industrialist.

The colonies in Connecticut and Rhode Island weren't just founded with religious exiles, but also from people trying to escape out from under the economic thumb of the first families.

America was founded and built by get-rich-quick schemers hungry for land and resources and the Puritans only had power in Massachusetts for around a century. They're remembered for banning Christmas wearing funny outfits and burning people at the stake. The actual colonists that did the hard work were perpetually drunk and looking for easy loot. They were a very disciplined, literate, and industrious people. Read Albion's Seed. Puritan New England was a flawed, but actually sustainable society. The southern cavaliers were just north american conquistadors basically. Borderers were chaotic-neutral riffraff.
