I'm looking for a book that details Vedic religion and explains how out of it came to be Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

Vedism is the rigid, sacrificial granddaddy. Hinduism is the chaotic, philosophical grandkid who dropped out, partied, and got deep. The Vedic crew are the OG nature gods like Indra and Agni. The Hindu pantheon... Shiva, Vishnu, Devi... Totally hijacked the franchise. The Mahabharata is peak Hindu fan-fiction, using Vedic lore to ask way cooler, based questions about life. The Vedas are the boring manual in comparison.

Hindus don't like this idea, but Hinduism is quite different from the traditional Vedic religion. It's no wonder that comparative mythology uses the RV and not Hinduism. In fact, things overlap so much that Sanskrit, the most "IE" language, has a wide range of non-IE elements absent in the ancient Vedic. They are different worlds and not very related. RV has several parts that are NOT canonical and were written much later, so this is a point to consider.

Yes, I'm aware of how Indra lost his relevance in later traditions and how the character lost his reputation and prestige to other modern Hindu gods. The Indra in Hinduism doesn't resemble the ancient one in the RV.
Indra was often depicted with yellow skin, not necessarily blond. The major gods of the Vedic religion are not the same as the more recognizable gods of modern Hinduism, such as Vishnu and Shiva, or the chimerical creatures like Ganesha (elephant) and Hanuman (monkey), who don't appear in the list of major Vedic gods.

Is Krishna even considered a god? I know there are gurus that see Krishna as an incarnation of god, extremely similar to Christ (notice the similarity also in their name). In fact there are Hindus that call the devas angels instead of gods, despite the fact that deva is cognate with Latin deus and Greek theos, meaning of course god.

Well, the book isn't one of the best, it's true, but it deals relatively consistently with the theme of the Rigveda, rituals, and gods, and how it differs from modern Poopduism in various aspects, although that's not really the focus of the book. Besides, the book was written by an old "Indologist" with some renown in the field (Witzel), so it's interesting, although he's quite pro-Poop at times, so take that as a caution. The title of the book is "Vedic Hinduism," and you can easily find it in PDF format just by writing the authors' names. But if it's so difficult, you can check this out:

The early Vedic religion was ooga-booga tier and borderline autistic, with strict hierarchy (this is where the caste system originates) and strong emphasis on ritual practice. The earlier portion of the Vedas, the Karma Kanda, and the Mimamsa school (which is the philosophical successor to the early Vedic religion) describe and detail these rituals and how to practice them. The Mimamsa school and its proponents like Jaimini defended the practice of ritual and duties and claimed that liberation could only be attained by proper ritual practice. It should be noted that “Hinduism” is a horribly vague term and arguable includes the ancient Vedic religion with all the other philosophies of India. It’s really only the later portions of the Vedas, the Upanishads, where you find the seed of a real philosophy. Brahman is the absolute reality, one without a second, absolutely simple and undivided. The true self of all sentient beings is none other than this Brahman. The “gods” of the Vedic religion are powerful beings but ultimately finite conditioned beings dependent on other things and are not ultimate. Liberation is to know the truth (Brahman), and that truth sets you free from samsara. Ritual cannot save you. The Brihadaranya Upanishad actually compares those who practice the rituals of the old Vedic religion to superstitious dogs, and rightfully so in my opinion. Even before the teachings of the Upanishads became formalized in the Vedanta school, the Buddhists had already BTFO the Vedic religion and its proponents.
