Did the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 have any real significance? Why is that war considered so important? At the end of World War II, Japan came under American occupation, and the Soviets annexed Southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands

One could argue that it segmented Russia and the Japanese Empire as mortal enemies, which Hitler likely took into consideration when allying with Japan to help keep pressure on Russia to coerce a partition of Poland ultimately leading to the second world war itself. Also likely contributed to Japans reluctance to adopt Communism and made it far easier for the US to assert its authority over Japan under the Truman Doctrine and postwar reconstruction

>Did the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 have any real significance?
The Japanese army found out that they had way too few people to win a land war in Asia, so they tried to make up for it by increasing their soldier's blind obedience to order.

>Did the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 have any real significance?
It caused decades of political instability in Japan that eventually lead to their chimp out during WW2

It let Japan consolidate its control over Korea, and the legacy of the imperial period still poisons Japan/Korea relations to this day
also it got Japan admitted to the great powers club, where it remains (G7 member and all)

>triggered the 1905 Revolution and put Russia on the road to Imperial collapse, civil war, and ultimately the rise of the Soviet Union
>convinced Japan of its racial and military superiority, leading to its establishing a foothold in continental Asia and ultimately a colonial empire
>beginning of the collapse of Japanese-American relations that ultimately culminated in the Second World War due to the Japanese public's being convinced that the American-negoiated Treaty of Portsmouth robbed them of the opportunity to seize the entire Russian Far East
>the one fucking time battleships were successfully employed in their intended role of forcing a decisive battle as opposed to just being fodder for submarines, aircraft, and coastal artillery

How could you not fucking know this?

It made ruling over colonies much harder to everyone around the world as the news of an Asiatic country defeating European one got widespread
Because of this, it might be one of the most important war in history

>It caused decades of political instability
How? Japan didn’t become politically unstable until the 1930’s due to the Wall Street crash and worsening relations with the west.
>chimp out during WW2
Japan was forced into fighting WW2 as a defensive war.

>>convinced Japan of its racial and military superiority
Japan wasn’t a racist country, it was the first country to propose an end to racial discrimination at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference.

>How?
>Protests by Japanese nationalists in Hibiya Park against the terms of the Treaty of Portsmouth ending the Russo-Japanese War escalated into a violent two-day citywide riot when the police attempted to suppress the protests. The Hibiya incendiary incident resulted in the death of 17 rioters, led to the collapse of the government of Katsura Tarō, and is considered the first event of the Era of Popular Violence.

That war was the starter pistol for the entire 20th century. It was the first time an Asian power crushed a European empire, sparking anti-colonial fires from Vietnam to India. Japan thought it had earned its empire, only to get shut down by the West at Versailles, fueling the militarism that led to WWII.
