Whatever malady you imagine he had, should be ignored if you're honestly trying to understand his work. He had a well-documented (including by himself) long history of medical pains and problems. Far more than almost anyone else has had. He created brilliant work despite all that suffering, as he describes in many cases using that pain to fuel and inform his output.
