You're right about southerners being dogshit fighters, but wrong about everything else.
1, they didn't make up the majority of the US military at the time. They may have been the main volunteers, but nearly 80% of the US military was drafted, usually from the Northern and Midwestern states.
2, the US Army was usually on pretty equal footing with the German Army. Whether this be because of the sheer number of Sherman tanks available or skill is really up to debate.
This was in no part thanks to the 'brave southern soldier' myth dixiecels latch onto a spam on this board. Southern soldiers and generals were infamous for getting their asses kicked by Germans and the Japanese, which is why most of them remained as no name ineffective loser generals like William Hood Simpson and Holland Smith, and infamous cowards like ar the humiliating ranger defeat at Cisterna.
TL;DR The US Army was on pretty equal footing with the Germans, but you're right about southerners sucking shit and being cowards.

volunteered is a bit of a meme for WW2, not because any any lack, but because shortly after the war started the military outright stopped taking volunteers to help enforce a draft
