this is sort of my issue - serious historians worth reading are relatively niche and are known by very few people, whereas pop history, which is consumed by an order of magnitude more people, contains titles like "nazis: the true root of evil" or "the architects of german evil in world war two" or hyperbolic stuff along those lines and then they turn around and say that americans nuking civilians was the right thing to do and that they're the good guys for doing it

you don't have time to cram all the intricacies and dynamics of WWII into a kids head when all they are doing is sitting a exam with yes or no and "explain this one specific event" questions.
I only ever learnt about WWII from the perspective of the triple entente and even then you never went into specifics, even about important battles like the siege of Stalingrad.
Regarding the tripple alliance at most it was a quick glance at Germany's invasion of Belgium and the Manchurian crisis.
you lack the perspective of both the effects of the treaty of Versailles, the American Perry "expedition" of japan and the russo-japanese war that preceded WWII and shaped both countries "reasons" for fighting.
There's simply to much to teach kids regarding massive historical topics since there are so many things that contribute to their occurrence and no "side" ultimately acts with virtue or honor in most cases.

People who look at ww2 as a "good vs bad" are generally retarded and no historian does it. You're merely seething over the media/reddit take on ww2 which is heavily used and distorted for propaganda purposes.

That said, you'd be hard pressed to argue that the allies were "just as bad" as the Axis, because while historians emphasize on ww2 being a geopolitical war, it's still quite overwhelmingly disproportionate which side committed most of the atrocities on the civilian population and mistreated POW etc.
