Sorry Micks but the reality is that Ireland is simply too close to Britain for them to have allowed it to be independent throughout history. Every time there was an independent Ireland or Scotland throughout the middle ages and early modern period, England was under constant threat of border raids, piracy, or those places being used as staging grounds for full scale invasions of England.

The victim/victimizer duality mindset being applied to entire ethnic groups and nation states is honestly so retarded and tiring.

I am neither, dipshit. I am simply responding to this thread that is predicated on the ridiculous myth that Cromwell le genocided the helpless Irish just because they were Catholic. He invaded Ireland to ensure it didn't become a Royalist stronghold from which an army could paddle across in a day and invade the commonwealth.

That we’re having the ‘which famine do you mean’ discussion I think illustrates my point. The Irish have a reason to be angry at the English. I was simply pointing out that despite Ireland sometimes being a potential thorn in Britain’s side, the way they’ve been treated firmly puts things in a victim/victimizer relationship. I will agree that some of the deaths weren’t really the fault of the English outside of the norm for warfare and civil strife of the era. Just once you get into the later stuff like the great famine it becomes pretty indefensible.

I still think the Victim angle is pretty weird. What other victims are happy with their victimizer being responsible for protecting their seas and airspace? Europe is full of countries who massacred each other mercilessly and don't feel any guilt about it but none really brings that up nowadays
and honestly, it gets really fucking annoying when the irish president criticizes us for not spending on the military like our only major neigbhour was a major ally.

I did not say that, I said the irish have surrendered the responsibility for their own skies and sea to the british to the point the british navy treats irish waters as their own.

The British navy doesn't operate in Irish waters nor does the RAF operate in Irish airspace so what the fuck are you on about? The Irish coast guard and air corps assist the authorities in Northern Ireland so does that mean the UK has surrendered responsibility for NI to the Republic of Ireland? You're deluded as fuck.

seems I made a mistake and confused the economic zone with the national waters. still Ireland is fine with british military vessels ordering their civil ships around in that zone
>The Irish coast guard and air corps assist the authorities in Northern Ireland
you mean the two forces that consist of two ships and a bunch of helicopters? what do you think Ireland would do against any serious military pressure besides hoping the UK won't accept someone snooping around in their backyard? do you think it's usual that countries who identify as victims disarm themselves completely in the face of that victimizer?

>still Ireland is fine with british military vessels ordering their civil ships around in that zone

This is from the article you took the screenshot from.
>The Department of Foreign Affairs has launched an investigation following a confrontation between a Royal Navy warship and an Irish-registered trawler off the Donegal coast.
An Air Corps maritime patrol aircraft was dispatched and two Irish naval ships placed on standby after the skipper of the Killybegs-based fishing vessel, the Marliona, reported that a UK frigate ordered him to leave the area where he was fishing 60 miles off the Irish coast.

>It is understood that HMS Lancaster hailed the fishing vessel on Tuesday morning, informing the skipper they were commencing a joint operation with a submarine which would continue over the next three days.

>A probe was launched after the incident was reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Defence Forces. A maritime aircraft was sent to monitor the area where the UK warship was operating and two Irish naval vessels were redeployed to "show the flag".

>>18056923
>you think it's usual that countries who identify as victims disarm themselves completely in the face of that victimizer?

Victims? You're seething and a bit mental.

We should be armed to the teeth though and Britain is the biggest threat to us. They already struck the mortal blow these past 20 or so years so doesn't really matter anymore. They destroyed their own country and want to take ours down with them or they'll try fuck Ireland over to save their own from what they've brought on themselves.

which you understand was a completely impotent show of force as Ireland lacks any ability to deal with submarines, right?
when a russian submarine violates british waters they ask the british navy to track and escort it out out of them
when a russian submarine violates irish waters they ask the british navy to track and escort it out of them

I didn't claim the English people were victims. Their elites played geopolitical games to increase their own wealth and situate themselves in the best position possible. That's the same for the elites and decision makers of every geopolitical entity ever, including the Irish.

We don't need to rely on the English for anything. Who do we need you to defend our territory from? Only once have the government here asked the RAF to escorts a Russian plane out of our airspace a hundred miles of the west coast because the plane turned its transponder off and might pose a danger to other aircraft and British boomers act like the RAF and royal navy is out patrolling and defending Ireland. Ireland and Russia aren't even enemies like the UK and Russia. The only threat Russia is to Ireland is if they cut undersea Internet cables and that's the only thing that would bring them snooping around here.

There was plenty of food grown in Ireland it was just the poorest who relied on the potato. There was lots of food exported from Ireland while the poor starved. All the government in London had to do was ban food exports until the famine subsided but they wouldn't interfere with the free market economy.

TBF it probably would have been politically untenable in Britain to do so, while not suffering to the same extent as Ireland, the potato blight and the protectionist corn laws still left their mark on England in what would later be dubbed the hungry 40s. It's not as if the British government didn't try to do anything to alleviate the famine in Ireland by other means, though these were largely ineffective.
