It was basically a cultural extinction event. The absolute degeneracy of the 1970s gay life literally died out. It’s not a coincidence that the gay movement shifted to being more conservative afterwards (the shift from free love to gay marriage, etc).

I do worry that with the rise of Prep and the resulting decline in condom usage among gays, they are once again becoming a population susceptible to a new STD. As the AIDS epidemic showed, these things spread into the mainstream population, which means gays being unsafe in their sex is a risk for all of us.
