How did this actual orc religion ever become even remotely successful?

All religions are equally stupid. If you start to question Islam, you'll have to question Christianity and Judaism too, and if you question those, then you'll be strongly pressed to question even milder, more "philosophical" religions like Buddhism and Taoism, so that means you'll start to question the dogma of scientific consensus too, until you arrive at the truth that there are no truths outside of the context of human thoughts, and that every statement is relative to the person that said it.
Conversely, if you feel the need to defend Islam without trying to sound blindly dogmatic, you'll start to understand that others have their own reasons for defending their own religious beliefs, and so you must accept that what you declare to be true must be true for you and you only, and that each person will have their own intrasubjective definite truths.
Therefore, either go with blind dogmatism and renounce all opportunity for rational discourse with others or go for all-out skepticism and renounce any truths.
That is why any religion persists, because people who follow it have no need to evaluate their beliefs against anything that could have more truth to it.

Well, it began in 7th Century Arabia, and if you think Muslims aren’t very bright now, you should know that the time before Islam in Arabia was known as the Jāhiliyyah, literally meaning “Age of Ignorance” and the coming of Islam (a syncretic mix of heretical Christian sects, misinterpretation of Judaism, common pagan religions in the region, and Arab culture of the time) was actually considered a great enlightenment. It was really fucking bad. Not that we would recognize the Arabia 100 years after Islam was established as anything remotely tolerable from our perspective, but drastically better than the pre-Islamic times.

This is why Islam was successful. If Arabs further north that had extensive relations with the Romans and Sassanids (the Ghassanid Arabs and Lakhmids) would’ve been successful in becoming politically and culturally predominant in the region and spread Christianity to the Arabs further south and actually cemented it, the world would be a significantly better place today. Hell, putting aside my personal bias, I’d even be fine with the Sassanids getting to them first directly and spreading Zoroastrianism just to subdue the region.

Research the Jāhiliyyah Age and you’ll understand why the most primitive of nomads in central Arabia are so proud of Muhammad and remain steadfast on the path of Islam.

As to Christians, Muslim rulers sometimes secured the loyalty of Christian bishops/patriarchs so that those bishops can hold on to power while also using their influence on Christians to discourage rebellion and whatnot. I've read on this regarding Islamic Spain and Ottoman rule over Greeks.
Also, the protection status of the dhimmi given by Muslims also gave monotheist non-Muslims an incentive to not rebel and just gain the protections that sometimes were revoked anyway by some later rulers or sad sort of circumstances.
Sometimes they were killed off, banished, or forced to pretend to be Muslim like in the case of the Almohads and some others.
Muslim rulers employed a vast variety of tactics that would discourage and weaken rebellions really. I'm not familiar of any successful internal rebellion against Muslim rule, and to be honest Muslim rebellions against Christian rulers didn't fare much better either. A rebellion was always an uphill battle.
