Whats your favorite Catholic related work of art anon? Whats the backstory to it?

Mine is pic rel. Saint Anastasius of Persia, also known by his native name Magundat, was a Zoroastrian soldier (born of a magician) in the Sasanian army who later became a convert to Christianity.

In 614 CE, King Khosrow's forces captured Jerusalem and seized the relic of the True Cross. Magundat was part of this campaign and was deeply impressed by the relic and the Christians' devotion. This experience prompted him to inquire about the Christian faith. He left the army, was baptized in Jerusalem by Patriarch Modestus, and was given the name Anastasius ("resurrection").

I don't have a favorite as of yet, but I do love looking at all the different iterations of Catholic art to gain a look of how the culture and influence of the artist's environment is shown through the artwork. Seeing things like the clothes and armor in high detail that archeology can't show is why I love these.

I'm particularly very curious on this artwork "The Betrothal of the Virgin" (1420-1430) by Robert Campin for a multitude of reasons and I hope somebody here can educate me on it.
For one, the priest on the right has swastikas on his robe. Was this a common symbol for Christians at the time or is it meant to represent something in particular?
Two, are we able to assign a locality for the fashion or environment in the painting? I'm curious as to the fashion of two individuals on the left: they look Arabic to me. Am I correct in that assumption? I wonder if this painting is influenced from Spain and if this is a potential depiction of Mozarabs or Moriscos.

Swastikas are unironically deeply ancient European symbols. They were especially common in use by the Greeks and Romans as decorative friezes(i.e. the Greek key), mosaics, it's even on the sash of the sculpture of the Spartan warrior in Sparta. The Church would've simply continued to use it as an innately, endemic, ancient, regal Greco-Roman symbol, no different from an isosceles triangle, or a column. They've never not had it.

The symbol itself usually represents "Cycles"/Wheels in the broadest sense, (a) Sun as a specific allegory, where the sun is located at the "crux" of the 2 main lines/center of the diagram. See also the giant golden, solar disc on the priest's tiara, as well. Of course, every church is built on an East-West axis with the alter facing the sunrise, often with stained glass to allow in the Light.

The 4 main branches represent the 2 Equinoxes and Solstices, while the 2 "hooks" indicate the Cross-quarter days. You will often see this shown as an 8-spoked wheel in the IE world.

The church itself has gothic arches, and the Muslims on the left look more Ottoman/Turkic to my eye, rather than Arabic, per se, but all camel fuckers look alike to me.

There are also more historically correct "crosses" in the shape of a "T"(Tau). We're not exactly sure how the did it, but keeping the post i the ground and having prisoners carry the "crossbar" then putting it on the pre-sunked post just makes a lot more sense, especially in a place where wood is scared.

The original Greek uses "stavros"(staff)(post), as well, and makes more sense thematically when you place Christ in the role of the Nehushtan, the bronze serpent Moses lifted up on a "staff" to heal the People.
