Have a good old think about it. Really sit down and ponder how the population of slaves could drastically fall.

They died of dysentery, the French supply lines were disrupted, Global Bantu inflated their numbers to slander the plantation economy, they’re fine and were just deported, or they went to live on a farm in the country and your parents have gotten you a brand new slave. Just pick the narrative that suits your ulterior political motives, or makes you feel better. That, or just go with the worker to death in inconceivably brutal conditions bit.

They died of natural causes and the population declined gradually because they didn't reproduce.

They were worked to death.
Slaves in the Caribbean had a very high death rate since often it was more profitable to just buy more rather than to put effort in keeping the slaves alive.
The slaves that went to Brazil had an even higher death rate since its proximity to Africa, combined with Portugal's extensive slave-trading infrastructure, made it even cheaper to buy slaves.

Funnily enough, even though we often think of new world slavery in the American context, slaves that went to the US were the least likely to be worked to death. Mostly because it was way more expensive to transport them the extra distance.
