Victor Tony Jones was the 119th person executed by Florida since 1976, for stabbing his employer and his wife to death in Miami in 1990. Jones, an African-American, was born in New York City on May 1, 1961. His mother was reportedly an alcoholic and Victor and his siblings were taken from the home and sent to live with relatives. He and one sister ended up with an aunt in Miami. Victor ran away from home several times and when he was 11 stowed away on an airplane to New York, where he reunited with his mother and lived with her for a time. At 13 he overdosed on drugs and was hospitalized in Miami. At 14, a juvenile court requested that he be admitted to Jackson Memorial Hospital for psychiatric evaluation. The hospital did not find anything abnormal about his mental state and he was discharged with a diagnosis of "unsocialized aggressive reaction of adolescence" with no need of treatment. One hospital document stated that he'd previously been labeled at a juvenile facility as having borderline mental retardation, but no documents supported this assertion.

Jones had a fairly average school record with some above average English and writing skills. His academic performance was adequate until the 8th grade when he became involved in substance abuse and started skipping school, eventually dropping out in the 10th grade. He was in juvenile detention several times and was finally released following his 17th birthday in 1978. Jones briefly worked at a restaurant in Miami and then hitchhiked to Texas, where he sold drugs and did odd jobs for an income. He then moved to San Francisco where he supported himself mainly through thefts. Jones was back in Miami for a few weeks the following year and then went to Atlanta, where he stayed for six years and made a living through various jobs including as a waiter and club bouncer. He had several girlfriends, at least one of whom was live-in.

He returned to Miami in 1986 and worked as a groundskeeper and also sold drugs. Jones was arrested in 1989 for armed robbery and convicted of that offense when the murders that landed him in Florida's death row happened. Jones was let out of prison on condition release November 27, 1990 and hired December 18 by local business owner Jacob Nestor, who manufactured tools for plastic surgeons in the Sunshine State.

Just two days later, he stabbed Nestor, 67, and his wife Matilda, 66, at work. Matilda was stabbed in the back of the neck, cutting through her aorta. Her husband was stabbed in the chest, puncturing the heart. Before dying, he managed to get his gun and shoot Jones in the forehead, a painful but non-fatal injury. A UPS deliver man happened by, looked in the mail slot, and saw a man's limbs and blood on the floor. He went to a neighbor and called 911.

Police found Jones locked in the building, sitting on a blood-soaked couch, with the Nestors' wallets, keys, and other items in their pockets. Taken to a hospital for treatment, Jones admitted that he killed the Nestors because they owed him money.

Jones was convicted of two counts of first degree murder and armed robbery and sentenced to death. He appealed his conviction six times between 1999 and 2017 without success and Governor Ron DeSantis signed his death warrant August 25, 2025. Jones made a final appeal based on the grounds that he had cognitive deficiencies and was considered legally retarded, had been abused by the staff of the juvenile detention facilities he was placed in during the 1970s, that the justice system disproportionately targeted perpetrators of black-on-white crimes, and that he'd been denied due process. The state had also allowed claims to be filed by individuals placed in the Dozier School for Boys and Okeechobee School between 1940 and 1975 who were abused by staff there. Jones had been in the facilities 1975-78 which made him qualified for compensation. This appeal however was rejected by the courts.

His claim that he was mentally disabled also did not hold water as he had been found by psychiatrists to be of normal intelligence and in the years prior to his conviction had shown that he was fully able to take care of himself, hold down jobs, and move to and reside in different locations around the United States, even going so far as to stow away on an airplane at just 11 years old, a feat which had to take considerable planning skills. In no way did any abuse he could have suffered at the boys' schools in his teen years work as a mitigating factor in his decision to rob and stab to death two sexagenarians.

Jones's execution via lethal injection took place October 1 as a crowd of anti-death penalty demonstrators protested outside the prison. The Nestors' daughter Irene Fisher said it had been "difficult" but she was glad it was over and that he suffered less than her parents did. She said the couple had been high school sweethearts and had three children, but by the time Jones was executed, Fisher was the only one living; they had lost a baby in infancy and their son Michael had died in 2020 and didn't live to see the execution.

The most recent execution in the US was Roy Ward, executed by Indiana 10/10 for a murder committed in 2001 so that just misses the cutoff for /his/ and we can't do a thread about that one yet.
