There were attempts on the right (Lyndon LaRouche) to go around demanding the government put gays in concentration camps but if anything AIDS created sympathy for gays. An interesting thing is how this whole thing sort of synthesized later on with same-sex marriage, which might have been a byproduct of the AIDS crisis as paradoxical as that sounds. But the idea was to encourage monogamy and assimilate into mainstream society, and the language around it as a demand to organize around shifted the terrain from "sex" (which people can always find a reason to oppose) to "love" with the image being an elderly lesbian couple.

Well that and retroviral drugs. There are drugs now that reduce the viral load in the blood to levels below the level which it can be transmitted. It's not "cured" but you won't infect others.

The "AIDS is divine retribution for gays" angle is weird to me. All the HIV info I've grown up with talked about infection through sex "both ways". I thought it's weird that people propagandized it as punishment for gays when straight sex also transmits it. Like syphilis has existed since Ancient Greek and nobody ever said it's gay punishment.

What is it you guys actually want from them anyway? Gays exist. They have always existed. They always will exist. You can either accept that and deal with it, or criminalize it and it’ll go underground. HIV spread to the general population both because of blood products needed for medical treatment and because due to the suppression of homosexuality, a lot of gay and bisexual men had female partners that they unknowingly spread it to. It was always going to get out in the general population somehow. Especially since there was no control of it in the global south.

Extreme homophobia is really fear of oneself, that one might be tempted. Not necessarily that one WOULD be tempted, but fear of it. There's an insecurity there. It really doesn't have anything to do with gays. A positive thing is that right-wing parties these days have largely moved on. Scott Bessent is gay married as the high-ranking openly gay official in U.S. history, he's the secretary of the treasury (which places him higher in the order of succession than Buttigieg). He didn't get any congratulations from the LGBT organizations aligned with the Democrats though. In fact you can shock some liberals in this country by pointing that out to them, they don't even know that. The leader of the AfD in Germany is a lesbian.

Liberals were able to successfully direct people away from the idea that AIDS is a predominately gay disease (see: >>18073498). First, you had the name change from GRID to AIDS--then all the sob stories about non-gays who got the disease, like Ryan White. They also drew everybody's attention to the largely-heterosexual AIDS epidemic in Africa (which, frankly, is just a giant disease cesspit in the first place and not really representative of the AIDS epidemic in the western world at all), ignoring the fact that the overwhelming majority of HIV/AIDS cases in the west are among gay men, and anal sex is far more likely to transmit the virus.

Largely a myth. It is extremely difficult for men to get AIDS by having sex with infected women (it's somewhat easier the other way around). The highest transmission threshold in studies is around 1 per 500 acts of male/female unprotected intercourse, but probably lower.

If a man in the 80's/early-90's had AIDS, there were only three plausible transmission vectors - botched blood transfusion, extremely dirty usage of drug paraphernalia, or (by far the most common, accounting for probably 98 to 99% of all male cases), unprotected gay sex. Getting AIDS from a woman was always a cover story (Easy-E; Magic Johnson, etc.).
