I have 1000% confidence that the modern respectful temperament of Scandinavians is also owed to the fact that the institution of holmgang played such an important role during the nascent stages of their societies. Talk shit to a big guy? Get killed. Talk shit to a little guy? He nominates his big guy cousin as his champion and you get killed. Someone talks shit to you? You nominate your big guy cousin and that guy gets killed. Refuse to defend yourself from insult? You lose your human rights and people can kill you with impunity.
In that kind of environment, people very quickly learn mutual respect, responsibility, and also a sense of agency and initiative in maintaining the social order.
