Somewhat longer hair around the sides and back was fashionable for many men during the mid-19th century. The middle man takes it to an extreme for the time, but the left's is a little long for that fashion, if still somewhat explained by the general trend. Many more men had haircuts like the man at the right during the 1840s and 1850s.
