It sucked to be Dreyfus but it was pretty funny the french governments attempt to solve the issue was keeping him on the island and pray everyone would just forget about it. They didnt think he deserved to be there, he was given special treatment as to avoid the tropical hellhole experience , it would merely be embarrassing if they let him come home.

Dreyfus was innocent but it was a psyop. Esterhazy was a double agent who gave disinformation to the Germans. The documents provided to the Germans were actually useless and that was because French intelligence set up the whole exchange. They then manufactured the Dreyfus affair: creating a national scandal was good for the operation since it gave the Germans the impression that the leak was super serious, and that they were incompetent and got the wrong guy.

Esterhazy may have been trying to commit treason, but in that case, French intelligence was onto him and used him to leak disinfo. The French government involved Dreyfus in the matter because the socialist parties in France were getting popular and the French government wanted to move focus from class warfare politics to identitarian politics. We knew that the French government used there agents in the media to write stories about "Jewish power" 6 months before the Dreyfus affair.
