My interpretation has been that it’s being in control of your reactions. You will feel pain and you can’t stop feeling pain, but you will control how it affects you.

That's all of the dodekatheist tradition. Stoics had this complex view of what an object is and what it means to the perception so they divided layers of thinking to reality. They also believed in ekpyrosis, which but that probably came from the Eleatics originally.

Med buddhism. The interesting thing is it was developed by slaves and ended up adopted by emperors.
Christians adopted it minus the stuff about suicide.
