The military history of the civil war was completely fabricated to help the country heal by pretending there were these glorious battles between mostly white men, that the Confederates fought well but were overpowered by Union manpower and Sherman's scorched earth, that Lincoln only came around to abolishing slavery partway through the war, etc.
The truth is that, as Confederate primary documents suggest, was that the North and federal government had been overtaken by racial egalitarian zealots whose war strategy was to instigate numerous slave revolts across the South, basically by sending a corps of John Browns to pull off what John Brown couldn't. This was why there was so much racial violence against niggers during Reconstruction instead of massacring white carpetbaggers.
The history was re-written to conceal the embarrassment of both surviving white Southerners and white Northerners as it became apparent during Reconstruction that niggers cannot into white civilization.
