How have civilizations existed historically when nobody knows the answer to a question as fundamental as this? How can people continue on with their lives when they don't even know why they exist?

We do! It must be a result of the laws of logic. There must be something whose nonexistence would be a logical contradiction, and it's the source of other things.

Figuring out what exactly that contradiction is is the challenge so far. Ontological arguments amount to "if there is something like this then there is something like this", but don't identify the specific contradiction between a specific thing and nonexistence.

I think we can solve the question - we know where to look!

Life is pretty swell to experience regardless even if you don't know the answer to why we exist, and you are free to invent a purpose for your life anytime you want to.
