It's interesting.

The ancients believed that the same gods had been everywhere, so there were identifications and syncretizations, and they were often afraid of even incurring the wrath of other gods. But then Christianity came, reduced all gods to the level of demons or fiction, destroyed temples, and nothing. I mean, Zeus, Apollo, Thor, and so on never showed up.

This isn't actually true. Augustine notes in City of God that Pagan oracles were merely tainted by demons, but that some might have actually communicated with the one true God and all religion was merely a corruption of worship of him. This is similar to many Old Testament passages.

Again, the Jews regularly sacrificed animals in the temple. This was no different from the Romans. Moreover, they were polytheists in ancient times. And the Gospels generally rework popular pagan myths (or rather, tropes).

The early Church Fathers generally ignored the horrors of the Old Testament. They could criticize any myth or god, but the cruelty of the Old Testament... hahaha. The mental gymnastics begins.

By the way, the Augustine criticized egyptians for believing the world was over 100,000 years old.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand
They turned out to be right.

I am using Augustine as he was the most widely read Church Father. Probably the most read philosopher in the west for a millennia.

I think there was that one scene in the BRAVE eroge series where the loli saint got fucked by some lavademon dog, and then there is this colonial peruvian convent where some condemned to hell was getting fucked by a demon toad like in Jiburiru 4, so, nah, nothing new under the sun.

Augustine was a retard. He fell for the Jewish lie of monotheism and thus into the trash his writings go.

The gods did bring wrath though, the fall of Rome was punishment for embracing Christianity. Roman pagans believed in something called Pax Deorum in which continued worship of the gods was necessary for the survival of the Roman state. When Rome worshipped the gods, Rome was at its height and prospered and when Rome stopped worshipping the gods in favor of Christianity, Rome declined and eventually fell. So clearly the fall of Rome was punishment for not adhering to pagan traditions. It’s not a sign of their absence, but of their wrath. The gods do not rely on human worship to survive, but they proclaim that if we want their blessings we pay tribute to them. When humans stopped worshipping the gods, the gods merely withdrew their blessings as punishment. Restore their rites and their blessings will return again.

Actually God detested the practice and only considered it because it was an adequate temporary solution.
>Hebrews 10 :
>1For the law having a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image of the things; by the selfsame sacrifices which they offer continually every year, can never make the comers thereunto perfect:
>2For then they would have ceased to be offered: because the worshippers once cleansed should have no conscience of sin any longer:
>3But in them there is made a commemoration of sins every year.
>4For it is impossible that with the blood of oxen and goats sin should be taken away.
>5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith: Sacrifice and oblation thou wouldest not: but a body thou hast fitted to me:
>6Holocausts for sin did not please thee.
And Psalm 40:
>6Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; but thou hast pierced ears for me. Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require
