It doesn't select for religion. Religion is a side-effect of our other evolutionary traits.
Being hyper pattern seeking animals who anthropomorphize everything was good for survival. It kept us alive, when we saw a bush rustling. It was better to be afraid of the bush, because of the risk of predators. The humans who weren't afraid, eventually got eaten by a predator. Leaving only the ones who were afraid.
Religion taps into those survival instincts, so religious beliefs continue.
