Higher education for trade is something like 200 years old afaik. Might be older outside of Europe but I doubt it.
There was no such thing before the 19th century and all businessmen learned on the job, either inheriting from family members or getting promoted within a trade company.

Don't delude yourself, all phds are jokes because most research is bogus and that's all that separates you from an undergrad.
Individual phd holders might be clever and competent, but that's no consequence of their doctorate, and certainly not a requirement to get it.
