HISTORICAL MANGA
I'm sure anons have made threads like this before asking for recommendations. Instead, I'll bring 3 of my own recommendations.

To start it off:

Anna Komnene - Futaba Sato
>A manga that follows the life of Anna Komnene, daughter of Emperor Alexios Komneos and Empress Irene Doukaina. She was the author of "Alexiad", a historical work detailing the reign of her father, his appeal to the Western powers for a crusade against the Seljuk Turks, the Komnenian restorian, and her plot to depose her brother John II in favor of her husband Nikephoros Bryennios.

Ad Astra - Mihachi Kagano
>A chronicle of the Second Punic War, detailing the lives of both Hannibal Barca and Scipio Africanus. It covers everything from Hannibal's birth to his crossing of the Alps and near success in his campaign to take Rome.

A Bride's Story - Kaoru Mori
>A fictional story based on the historical events along the silk road and the central Eurasian Steppe. It covers multiple women and their marriages as they face the hardships of their culture and try to retain their nomadic life in the face of modernization and the ever approaching Russian borders along with their modern army.

I'll give one more, a personal favorite of mine.

Wolfsmund - Mitsuhisa Kuji
>A medieval depiction of the events leading to Wilhelm Tell's rebellion and his assassination of Albrecht Gessler. Duke Leopold Hapsburg's baliff, Wolfram, is charged with overseeing a gate and checking passers by for travel permits, referred to as "Wolfram's maw", or "Wolfsmund". Those who are caught are met with horrific punishment at the hands of the baliff. Even those who have the correct documentation are at the mercy of the baliff, who may declare them apart of Wilhelm's conspiracy against the Hapsburgs in Switzerland.

Issak - Shinji Makari

>About a man who survived a betrayal of his own fellow student, who fled after the fall of the castle. Then, he went on to Europe, just to find and kill him in midst of Thirty Years War as a mercenary of the Palatinate, while his nemesis, a mercenary for the Spanish Empire.
Anonymous No.18129557 [Report]
The Blue Eye of Horus - Chie Inudou
>Based on the life of Pharoah Hatshepsut, who overshadowed her brother and husband Thutmose II, and out of a desire to not marry again and put Egypt's 18th dynasty into a potential succession crisis, she is crowned legitimate Pharoah and thus must act as a man. Historically, she is depicted as a man with masculine traits for this very reason, even though it is acknowledged everyone was fully aware she was a woman.

I have a few recommendations, but I'm on a shifter so no images.

Cesare
>Bookish and naive, Angelo da Canossa is unprepared for life as a student in a university that hums with tension and intrigue in Renaissance Italy. Will his innocence remain intact when a chance encounter with the charismatic Cesare draws him ever deeper into the darker side of the Renaissance?

Golden Kmauy
>In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.

>Hyouge Mono
It was the Sengoku Era, a time when warring Daimyō usurped each other constantly.
There was a man whose soul was overtaken by the ways of tea and material greed
as he strenuously worked his way up towards greater power and status.
His name was Furuta Sasuke, a vassal of Oda Nobunaga in the Yamashiro province.
With his world broadened by Oda's genius and Tea Master Sen no Sōeki's spiritual insight,
Sasuke travelled the road of the Hyouge Mono or "comical fellow".
To live or not to live. For power or the arts.
That is the question!

These two also have anime adaptations.

The Ravages of Time
>Nearly 2000 years ago, the prosperous Han dynasty of China collapsed. Heroes rose and fell, and three nations emerged–Wei, Shu, and Wu. Historians refer to this period as the Three Kingdoms period. The romance of the three kingdoms is an intriguing tale of heroic deeds, of alliance forged and broken, of loyalty and betrayal. Hong Kong artist Chan Mou retells this classic tale in "The Ravages of Time" from the perspective of the Sima clan, which in the end united the three kingdoms. Readers will be attracted by an array of well-developed characters and Chan Mou's own unique top-notch art-style. Whether you have played Dynasty Warriors or not, this is definitely worth a read!

Ravages of time is my favorite manhua. The allusions to both Romance and historical events is S-tier. The use of Chinese literature from the time period, so it would have been realistic for them to cite and quote, is also excellent. I love it's re-interpretations of events. Art s also gorgeous.

Shame the author's nearing his 50's or around there. He's in the same boat as the Kingdom guy. Who knows if he's got enough left in him to finish or he might go the way of the Berserk author. They're currently in Liu Bei's takeover of Yi arc, which leaves a chunk of more 3K events left.

Mesoanon here, I'll shill some anime and manga influenced Mesoamerican stuff that's good

>Onyx Equinox
Anime-inspired western animated series. Follows the most lowly, pathetic human, a Mexica boy named Izel, as he is tasked with closing the Underworld gates by a faction of Aztec gods in a feud with Underworld deities. Adventures and different deities trying to backstab each other with the cast used as pawns ensues.

Pretty damn well researched, cities are painted and urbanized properly, different cultures have their own unique dress and architectural styles, Mesoameircan iconography is used in ways tying into its actual symbolism, even the plot ties into themes found in Nahuatl poetry. However, plays things loose with the historical timeline, and poor animation, though good background art and visual design help make up for that. First half is pretty episodic but second half is a big step up

>Codex Black
Manga/anime inspired comic series, follows Donaji, a Zapotec girl and celebrated hero of her town gifted with a magic quechquemitl shawl, who is searching for her missing father and is struggling with imposter syndrome, as well as Itzcacalotl, a Mexica boy cursed with crow wings, as they get caught up in a dark plot with a magic cult and the threat of Aztec expansionism.

Even more well researched and immersed in Mesoamerican symbolism, motifs, and the timeline then Onyx is. Gorgeous art as well. I haven't read Book 2 yet though and Book 3 isn't out yet so hard to say how it all plays out

>Necahual
Mesoamerican Magical Girl webcomic a la Sailor Moon. Haven't given it a super close look, admittedly

I'm sure there's others i'm forgetting, and I know others that aren't as overtly anime or manga influenced I didn't mention. A long time ago there was a thread on /a/ with Indigenous themed manga and anime but I haven't been able to find it since to mention stuff from it

Maybe I'll dump some Japanese Mesoamerican artists who do smaller manga/4koma stuff later
