There's a possibility there were missions in ancient times and the beliefs got garbled. The reason the northern tribes didn't do human sacrifice is according to folklore because God told us not to (an unusual request for a pagan one) and we did not worship idols. There's a rabbithole that Natives were evangelized in ancient times (like apostolic) but lost the knowledge. The missionary(Christ?) is called by several tribes "Wakea."

(FWIW- Societies without Christianity have higher infant mortality rates and child sacrifice and babies get in to heaven. Warfare and famine increase it. The most hardcore Prot Bible-owning places a hundred years ago- Britain and America- were also the best places to spawn if you want to survive childhood. Which ones, where? Some Northern Native Americans absolutely practiced human sacrifice. The coastal tribes of the PNW, for example.

The world is built in a way to self destruct if the humans aren’t happy. If your life sucks because the world that other humans created for us sucks then don’t reproduce, this will ensure that the suffering ends with you. People that keep reproducing in bad environments are bad selfish people.
If you look back into the past the world has always been a bad place to live, it has always been ruled by evil men, it’s been millennia after millennia of suffering.
