Hitler flunked art school, I wouldn't trust his opinions on art to be honest. In fact his taste seems to be awfully generic Romanticist and NeoClassical slop, which was just the 19th/20th century equivalent of Marvel movies, completely unchallenging and for the masses. Hitler was also a huge fan of Disney cartoons so it doesn't surprise me that his taste in art would be so pedestrian.

Readymade art is basically just realism taken to a purist extreme. It's something that really only exists as a result of the industrial revolution since the point is to step back the trivialization of manufactured pieces. It's meant to say "If you really stopped and thought about it, bicycle wheels are pretty cool" which is one of those things that I also think has a novelty that wears off pretty quickly, which is why I think it died so quickly. Found Objects are similar but they can be for more than just manufactured items, which I think is somewhat more interesting since the objects have more of a story behind them

I can appreciate their aesthetics while also acknowledging that outright hatred for humanity of those artistic schools and their masters. I would especially be sore about them if I could in any way draw a correlation between the themes in their art and the pillaging of my country. Was it perfectly rational in an aesthetic sense to call them bad? No. Is it understandable why the NSDAP hated them? Yes.

Eh I mean I go to my local museum often, really good abstract modern/post-modern art usually plays to dread or lost innocence or other unpleasant themes. It's not bad in isolation but when it comprises most of what makes art nowadays it can get a bit tiring. If I were to think of an example of the respite I mentioned probably something along the lines of Yayoi Kusama. I contrast this heavily with the time I spent in Europe looking at the works of the Renaissance and Baroque masters in all mediums. They definitely feel different.

I mean look at the movies produced in the Third Reich. A lot of light-hearted romantic comedies and musicals and stuff like that. Leni Riefenstahl was famous but they didn't actually make very many political movies.

The forms vary but what totalitarian systems have in common is that art has to be clear (unambiguous), uplifting, and directed in a way that it's like a teacher telling you what to think, how to behave, what to look like, and so on. Nazi views on art never made much sense doctrinely. For instance they banned the sculpture of pic related, a man who based his style off traditional north German peasant art, and instead favoured discounted and shoddy derivatives of Greco-Roman styles.

Invariably, in both instances the response to the complete and utter lack of emotional response to their "art", or outright revulsion, is simply to say that the viewer "just doesn't get it, bro", or it's "too complicated", or "you're not supposed to like it", or "then don't look at it", or "I don't care what you think. It's not for you.", "muh Identity"......nothing but excuses for bad work, which they know they can't defend either.

If there was any value to this "art", it would have endured, but it does not, so it did not.

I despise having to pretend Hitler’s art is anything but uninspired mediocrity just because I otherwise admire the man.

Because, "art" is more about "let's make this look as realistic as possible". If we were to go the route of "lets make this look as realistic as possible", then that was perfected already in the 1700s.

However, if you recall, there was an important invention around the late 1800s called photography. This made the whole "let's make a realistic painting" kind of useless. Just take a picture of something.

Then in the late 1800s/early 1900s, art became "let's make stuff that cameras cannot", and thus you see impressionism, abstraction, pointillism, futurism, etc etc.
