This doesn't even make sense. Governments are not states, a state is the government plus everything outside of it, including religion and culture. As far as the markets doing "better", markets only seek to expand and are at the whims of its most pernicious interlocuters. There's no built in justice in a market, it has to be produced and put onto the markets. The markets only want to expand themselves, which is basically what liberalism is. Liberalism is just the cultural side of capitalism. Liberalism also doesn't survive when war is on the table and neither do free markets.

No, what you're referring to is called a nation. A nation is properly defined as a group of people with shared ethnicity and culture. The form of government that they have doesn't factor into it unless they have a traditional form that is part of their culture.

The state refers to the jurisdiction of a governing body which rules over that nation, it does not have to necessarily belong natively to the people who constitute a nation.
For example the case of an occupation state.
Nations proper do not have borders. States do. A state can contain multiple nations within it.

Everything since 1979 proves you wrong. Today several of the worlds most powerful countries (Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Qatar) are entirely or to some degree Muslim theocracies. Other big countries (Pakistan, Indonesia) are nominally democratic/secular but with significant Islamic control of society. In the Sahel secular/socialist forces are getting crushed by jihadists. Communism may have temporary wins in East Asia and perhaps even the West, but it is doomed in the long run.
