I think the Catholic Church's previous brutal suppressions of reformers like Hus, Wycliffe and Tyndale, and continued corrupt practices, made it inevitable that there would eventually be an explosion from a reformist movement that was militantly anti catholic.

I think none of it and most of human history as it carried out was necessary at all. Even the so called elite failed to grasp that the solution was to uplift the masses, not make them slaves. How well do you rule if all the servants are not rulers too?
