During the Korean Three Kingdoms Period, the King of Silla had a bodyguard of archers called the Hwarang (Flower Youths). To join this prestigious formation you have to be born from nobility and be twink af.

During the Three Kingdoms Period, one of the warring Korean states Silla allied with Tang to destroy it's competitor. Think it was Balhae. Silla was the ultimate beneficiary as it swallowed up all that extra land and Chinese manpower did a lot of the world.

Then when the Tang tried to turn Silla into a proper annexed state Silla fought back and got the better status of independent tributary. It's like shit straight out of a Paradox campaign. Use your allies to win your wars of conquests for you.

>Son is mentally-ill
>Can't stop randomly killing people and raping maids
>He's also your only surviving son
>He's the Crown Prince
>Crown Prince is absolutely bonkers and will stir shit up and ruin the Kingdom if he ascends the throne
>Only hope is Crown Prince dies and his son, your grandson, to take over
>Crown Prince commits enough crimes he really should be executed
>But Confucian and Korean law says if the son commits a crime, the father should also be executed. And the wife. And the son.
>"Oh shit. If I order his execution, I'll legally have to kill myself and my grandson. Fuck."
>Genius loop hole idea.
>Delay execution/trial.
>Order son to climb into a rice chest. He can't refuse or else the father can discipline for being an un-filial son.
>Tie the chest up with rope. Move it to the attic.
>Don't feed him.
>Everyone in the palace can hear the Crown Prince begging for food.
>After 7 days the cries stop. He's dead by the morning of the 8th day.

Oh they won in the end
But like... they lost several times right? Otherwise they would've stayed, I mean the Mongols annexed conquered territory
Unless they won every time and just took over very slowly e_e
All this wondering but I refuse to reread this article.

The mongols were not defeated. They failed to take any strongholds but the Korean army also refused to take the fight to the mongols, whereas the entire civilian populace took the blunt of the military defense. Nothing was capitalized. The mongols took leave on the pretense of Korean fealty and the Koreans immediately took to rearming themselves after each war.

In general the Koreans actually won more battles then the Mongols but it was often offset by a more significant defeat afterwards.

The chinese man knew that there were endless hordes of demonic barbarians churning all around them. They just figured that the dark days had finally come to pass.
Chinese people understood the dynastic cycle, it wasn't a secret. No sense in fighting against the mandate of heaven, even if it's being held by a manchu or something.
