Why do biblefags take anything away from the story of Jacob and Esau besides "Wow Jacob is a fucking dick?" Is it because Jacob's conniving clearly duplicitous and immoral behavior worked? I mean, sure, it did, but like, Jacob is still pretty clearly evil yet I see apologetics trying to say actually Esau was a rapist or it was all just highly symbolic too deep for me to understand - even though it's a story about a wicked man exploiting a starving person to extort their birth right from them

Thats what makes it a good story. Conniving trickster youngster jacob, then he gets a taste of his own medicine being deceived by Laban, becomes a father and learns protecting his family is more important than himself, then gets the ultimate ironic comeuppance of being tricked himself by his sons saying joseph was killed, all ending with him old and blinding like his father Isaac and intentionally blessing the younger son of Joseph above the older, as a parallel to how he as the younger decieved Isaac into getting Esaus elder blessing. Its a great story, if jacob was just a good guy the entire time with no character development it would be boring as shit

Because it's hilarious. Esau lets himself get conned but he unironically forgives his brother even years later despite being scammed repeatedly, while jacob spends all his time seething and being terrified esau will kill him in vengeance. Jacob is just so jewish he gets renamed Israel.

Jacob and Esau are allegories about Israel having the divide blessing of land of Canaan over Edom. Any other explanation is secondary.

Yeah exactly its a recurring theme throughout the old testament where god favors the younger over the older and the weaker over the stronger, its a big pivot compared to texts like gilgamesh where the gods only care about the strongest chad. It's the same theme that gets carried into the beatitudes with blessed are the meek blessed are the poor in spirit etc. Imo one of deepest themes in the bible is gods special and surprising concern for people who are structurally second class.
Sure you can read jacob and esau as "jacob is a meanie" but thats missing all the good literary interaction with the established themes.
